An AC leak is irritating, but not necessarily the end of the world. In fact, you might even be able to repair it yourself. Here are a few causes of AC leaks.
Dirty Filters
A dirty filter can cause an AC leak. This one is an easy one you can do yourself. All you need to do is clean the filter, or change out the filter if you don’t have a permanent one.
You should be cleaning your filter every three months at the absolute minimum, to prevent dirt and dust from building up in the system and causing damage to your unit.
Clogged Condensate Drain Line
A properly functioning drain line is one of the most important yet most overlooked, parts of an air conditioner. The condensate drain line plays an essential part in your cooling system by removing excess moisture that is produced in the process.
Dirt and debris can build up in the line, which leads to it becoming clogged and leads to an AC leak. That can also lead to mould and mildew growing in your drain line.
You should be able to clear the drain line yourself if there is minimal damage. You can use a wire brush or pipe cleaner to dislodge the clog, with a cleaning solution such as diluted bleach or vinegar. You may want to have a bucket ready to catch water that’s in the line.

Low Refrigerant Levels
The refrigerant helps your air conditioner cool the air. Low refrigerant means your AC can’t do its job properly. Your AC has to work harder to maintain the temperature. Frozen Evaporator Coil

A broken condensate pump means your AC unit is likely not working the way it’s supposed to. There are some things you can do to try and correct it yourself, such as:

- Tapping the microswitch gently
- Checking the float
- Empty the reservoir
- Check for clogs
